Dining Out and Losing Weight: A Guide to Making Smart Choices

Going out to eat can be a great way to socialize and enjoy new flavors, but it can also be a challenge when trying to maintain a weight loss goal. But don’t let that stop you from enjoying a night out with friends and family! Here are some tips from Registered Dietician Ilyse Schapiro on how to dine out and still lose weight:

  1. Look at the menu ahead of time. Sometimes menus at restaurants can be overwhelming, so it’s helpful to make a mental game plan before arriving. This way, you know what you want and won’t be distracted by too many choices.
  1. Don’t arrive overly hungry. Eating consistently throughout the day will prevent overeating on the bread basket.
  1. Drink plenty of water. Often, when we think we’re hungry, we’re actually just thirsty.
  1. Be mindful of alcohol. Alternate every glass of alcohol with water to keep the calorie count down and avoid making poor choices. Drinking alcohol during a meal can also make you more relaxed and less likely to make good choices.
  1. Share an appetizer and entree with someone you’re dining with. This allows you to try more flavors without overeating.

Most importantly, enjoy yourself! Dining out can still be enjoyable while trying to lose weight. If you have any questions, feel free to ask them below.
